We spoke to our Chief Clinical Officer, Dr Nyree Whitley, to get her advice on looking after your children’s dental health, her top tips for avoiding the worst offenders and the small changes parents can make to create fun, festive snacks that promote good oral health this Halloween.

Are sweets and other sugary snacks ok in moderation?

No one wants to give-up eating the things they love, especially around the festive season. The same is true for children. But Nyree comments: “moderation is key, I recommend removing any particularly sugary or sticky treats. Instead, opt for a moderate amount of chocolate. It may still have a high sugar content, especially in its milk or white forms, but it is generally gentler on teeth than hard, crunchy or chewy sweets.”

Why are Halloween snacks bad for teeth?

Halloween snacks are not worse for teeth than other sugary treats. But Halloween exposes children to high volumes of sweets, chocolate and crisps through activities like trick-or-treating or parties. But how does the sugar in these snacks damage teeth?

Nyree comments: “When we eat sugar, it interacts with the bacteria in plaque to produce acid, which can slowly dissolve the enamel on our teeth and create holes or cavities. I recommend that, if children do enjoy a Halloween treat, they should do so in moderation and preferably after meals when saliva production is at its highest, helping to protect teeth from sugar's harmful effects.”

What are some ways to limit damage to teeth this Halloween?

It’s no secret that consuming too much sugar can have a harmful effect on our overall health, but it is also the leading cause of tooth decay in both children and adults. When we eat sugar, it interacts with the bacteria in plaque to produce acid, which can slowly dissolve the enamel on our teeth and create holes or cavities.

To limit damage to teeth this Halloween, Nyree suggests: “If your children have a naturally sweet tooth, try to allow them to enjoy sugar in balance and opt for unprocessed forms of sugar where possible. If you find that they usually reach for sweets, try switching them out for dark chocolate and enjoy it in moderation to maintain a healthy smile. Another suggestion could be offering a trade, switching an unhealthy for a healthier alternative. This can work particularly well if your child has an existing favourite.”

What are some healthy alternatives to enjoy this Halloween?

While it’s natural for children to enjoy some Halloween treats, there are many creative and healthy alternatives that can help protect their oral health this spooky season.

Spooky Cheese Shapes - Nyree commented: “cheese is an excellent snack for children as it increases saliva flow, which helps wash away food particles and neutralises acids in the mouth.”

By using biscuit cutters shaped like pumpkins, ghosts, or bats, parents can turn cheese slices into fun, spooky shapes that children will love. Pair these shapes with wholegrain crackers for a more balanced bite.

Monster Veggie Sticks with Houmous - Nyree commented: “raw vegetables like carrots, cucumbers, and bell peppers offer a satisfying crunch without sugar, making them a great addition to any lunchbox.”

Serve them with low-fat houmous, a protein-rich dip made from chickpeas, for a delicious and healthy snack. For a Halloween twist, try arranging the veggies as monsters using olive eyes or bell pepper tongues.

Apple Slices with Almond Teeth - Nyree commented: “On the surface, crisps or similar snacks may seem like a healthy alternative to chocolate and sweets for your kids to snack on. But crisps can in fact be worse for their teeth than chocolate. The starch found in crisps and other potato snacks breaks down into sugar, these sugars then contribute to tooth decay.”

Although an apple a day won’t keep the dentist away, if your child often craves crisps in their packed lunch, apples have a bite that may satisfy that craving for a crunch. To give it a spooky twist, you could cut an apple into crescent shapes and add sliced almonds to give the illusion of vampire-like teeth.

By incorporating a few of these tooth-friendly tricks, you can help your child enjoy Halloween without compromising their smile. Balancing festive treats with healthier options and encouraging moderation will not only protect their teeth but also set them up for good habits. So, as the trick-or-treating unfolds, you can be confident that your child’s dental health is in safe hands—no magic required!

World Heart Day is a time for sharing information and spreading awareness, ensuring people all over the world can access the care and treatment they need to keep their hearts healthy.

As the UK’s leading provider of dental care, an important part of our work at mydentist is encouraging good oral health practice in our patients, ensuring that their teeth and gums are well cared for and their oral health is maintained.

This World Heart Day, we wanted to discuss research linking the health of your gums with the health of your heart. Join us as we explore gum disease and the importance of a consistent oral health routine in limiting the impact poor gum health can have on your cardiovascular health and well-being.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is caused by bacteria in the mouth, leading to inflammation and infection of the gums. It progresses in two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis, the initial stage of gum disease, manifests as red, swollen, and bleeding gums. If untreated, it typically advances to periodontitis, where the infection spreads to the tissues and bone supporting the teeth.

What causes gum disease?

Poor oral hygiene is the primary cause of periodontal disease, as it allows plaque and tartar to accumulate. Other risk factors include smoking, hormonal changes, certain medications, genetics and underlying health conditions like diabetes.

The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE), suggests that almost half of adults in the UK have a degree of periodontitis that is not reversible. While the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that periodontal disease affects around 19% of the global adult population, with more than a billion cases worldwide.

Gum disease is incredibly common and despite gum disease having some obvious tell-tale signs, some people may not experience noticeable symptoms, making regular dental check-ups vital for early detection.

Symptoms of periodontal disease that you should look out for include:

Tender or bleeding gums

Receding gums

Loose teeth

If you’re exhibiting any of these symptoms and have not recently seen your dentist for a check-up, or you’re concerned about your oral health, we recommend contacting your local mydentist practice to schedule a thorough assessment of your oral health.

The connection between gum disease and cardiovascular health

But how can the health of your gums increase your risk of a cardiovascular condition?

Put simply, research suggests that bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream through the gums, especially during brushing or flossing. Once in the bloodstream, these bacteria can travel to various parts of the body, including the heart, potentially leading to cardiovascular diseases. Studies have found that gum disease may have implications for your cardiovascular health, including an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

In addition, it appears that gender doesn’t play a role in how susceptible you are to developing a cardiovascular illness due to poor oral health, with conditions like stroke, myocardial infarction and cardiovascular disease presenting equally in both men and women of all ages studied.

How to prevent gum disease?

This World Heart Day, we want to encourage our patients to take care of themselves and to speak to their dentist if they feel something is amiss with their oral health. Maintaining regular and effective oral health routine won’t just improve your dental health; it could improve your confidence in your smile and reduce your risk of developing a more serious medical condition.

We recommend that to maintain your oral health at home, you brush your teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush, ensuring you clean all surfaces, including the gumline. Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and consider using an antimicrobial mouthwash to kill bacteria and freshen breath.

Regular dental check-ups allow for early detection and intervention. Your dentist can identify signs of gum disease and provide appropriate treatment. Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar, which are major contributors to periodontal disease.

Lifestyle changes can also help. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products, maintain a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and manage stress effectively to support your immune system. If you’re concerned about gum disease, the NHS have provided helpful guidance to help you prevent infection and keep your gums in tip-top shape on their website.

We believe it's essential to recognise the connection between oral health and cardiovascular well-being. By taking care of your gums, you are not only protecting your teeth but also potentially reducing your risk of heart disease and stroke. A consistent oral health routine—brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups—plays a crucial role in keeping both your mouth and heart healthy.

This World Heart Day, we ask our patients to remember that a healthy smile goes hand-in-hand with a healthy heart. If you're new to mydentist and looking for a practice, find your local mydentist practice today.
One person who knows the joy of baking all too well is Dr Laxmi Hegde, a general dentist at mydentist Bridgewater. Away from the surgery, Laxmi has built a reputation as the practice’s very own ‘star baker’, delighting colleagues, friends and family with her spectacular cakes and cupcakes.

Patience, precision – and piping

Laxmi first discovered baking in May 2020 while on maternity leave during the first COVID-19 lockdown. She commented: “I was on maternity leave, and I remember my social media feeds suddenly becoming full of people baking, so I started to experiment with it.

At first, I thought baking would be just like cooking, so I did not follow a recipe. I added random ingredients without measuring anything out – it was a disaster! But with some practice (and a recipe) I got better and started to really enjoy it.”

Since then, she’s perfected her craft. When asked about her most successful creation to date, Laxmi commented: “It would have to be my son’s first birthday cake. It was a 4-layer vanilla sponge cake with buttercream decorations. I managed to pull off a stripy finish and it turned out beautifully.”

For Laxmi, baking is more than just a hobby: “Between two kids, postgraduate study and work, it is hard to find time for myself. But baking is like therapy to me. It helps me relax. There is also a definite crossover between baking and dentistry – both requiring patience and a steady hand.”

When it comes to how Laxmi's hobby affects the team in practice, Leanne Villers, Practice Manager at mydentist Bridgewater, commented: “Laxmi is modest about her skills as a baker, but her cakes are magnificent. We couldn’t believe she was so gifted! It is such a treat when she brings cupcakes in for the team, they’re the perfect pick-me-up, and it always puts a smile on everyone’s faces.”

Enjoying Bake Off bakes without risking your smile

If you're inspired by our favourite baker or plan to perfect some home bakes during this season of Bake Off, you may want to know more about enjoying your favourite treats without putting your teeth at risk. We asked our Chief Clinical Officer, Dr Nyree Whitley, for her advice:

Why is sugar harmful for teeth?

“When we eat sugar, it interacts with the bacteria in plaque to produce acid, which can slowly dissolve the enamel on our teeth and create holes or cavities. I recommend that, if you do enjoy a treat, do so in moderation and preferably after meals when saliva production is at its highest, helping to protect teeth from sugar's harmful effects.”

What are some ways to limit damage to teeth when baking or eating sweet treats?

“If you have a naturally sweet tooth, try to enjoy sugar in balance and opt for unprocessed forms of sugar where possible. If you find that they usually reach for sweets, try switching them out for dark chocolate and enjoy it in moderation to maintain a healthy smile."

Inspired to bake?

Whether you’re recreating a Bake-Off technical challenge at home or whipping up your own showstopper, remember that enjoying sweet treats is all about balance. A few small changes can make a big difference for your smile:

Try chocolate over high-sugar sweets for decoration – it’s usually gentler on teeth

Enjoy cakes and desserts with meals rather than in between to reduce the risk of damage from acid

Experiment with sugar alternatives or reduced-sugar recipes – many bakers find they still get great results

Join Dr Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer here at mydentist, as she explains the risks of drinking sugar-free fizzy drink and shares practical advice to help you protect your smile.

Fizzy drinks and tooth decay

Most people understand that drinks high in sugar can lead to cavities, but when it comes to energy drinks, the risks go beyond sweetness. Nyree explains here that even sugar-free versions can pose a threat.

“Although they’re growing in popularity, fizzy energy drinks can be detrimental to your oral health. Most energy drinks contain high levels of sugar, which can cause cavities and tooth decay. Most people are aware of the links between sugary drinks and tooth decay, but few realise that sugar-free fizzy drinks come with their own dental risks too. In any food or drink it’s not just sugar content people need to be aware of; they also need to watch out for acidity levels too.”

Acidity is often overlooked – but it’s one of the biggest contributors to long-term dental damage. Fizzy energy drinks are often packed with ingredients like citric acid and phosphoric acid, both of which erode tooth enamel – the protective outer layer that shields the sensitive parts of your teeth.

Nyree adds: “Food and drinks with high acidity increase the chances of tooth erosion, stripping away tooth enamel and exposing the soft and sensitive inside of the tooth. Tooth erosion leads to increased sensitivity, discolouration, and weakness which can result in teeth being more prone to cracks and chips. And it can’t be reversed – once a tooth loses its enamel it’s gone forever.”

Energy drinks and enamel erosion

The enamel on your teeth is the hardest substance in the human body – but it’s not invincible. Once it’s worn away by acids, it doesn’t grow back. This makes enamel erosion one of the most serious and permanent risks of regular energy drink consumption.

In a 2024 article by The Sun, it was reported that children as young as ten are becoming hooked on energy drinks, sometimes consuming them first thing in the morning and in some instances, before breakfast. Without food to help neutralise the acids or stimulate saliva production, the damage to developing teeth can be even more severe.

At mydentist, we’re especially concerned about this trend – and we want to make sure families, teenagers, and young adults understand the risks and feel confident making healthier choices.

Caffeine, dry mouth and grinding

In addition to acidity and sugar, most energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine – often much more than a standard cup of coffee. While caffeine may give you a mental lift, it can also cause dry mouth, which increases your risk of tooth decay.

“Because energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine, you may also experience a dry mouth – this is because saliva naturally helps to neutralise acids and protect your teeth, but caffeine can impact your saliva production. Over time, this could cause cavities and other oral health issues,” Nyree says.

Caffeine can also worsen teeth grinding, especially if consumed regularly or in large amounts. Grinding, or bruxism, can wear down enamel, cause jaw pain, and lead to tooth damage – especially when combined with weakened enamel from acids.

Nyree added: “Similarly, if you experience tooth grinding, you may find that caffeine triggers it, and this could cause tooth damage. One of the biggest culprits in all fizzy energy drinks – regardless of their sugar content – is phosphoric acid and citric acids (also known as citrates). These bond with calcium and eat away at tooth enamel.”

Should children have access to high-caffeine energy drinks?

In the UK, a 12-week consultation period is currently underway to ban the sale of high caffeine energy drinks to children under the age of 16. In a recent article, the Standard reported that Wes Streating, the Health Secretary, compared just one can of high caffeine energy drink to “necking four cans of Coke”, as he vowed to protect children’s health. And, according to government findings, 8 out of 10 parents wanted to see a ban on the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to children go ahead.

Nyree commented: “Although they’re growing in popularity, fizzy energy drinks can be detrimental to your oral health. Most people are aware of the links between sugary drinks and tooth decay, but few realise that sugar-free fizzy drinks come with their own dental risks too. It’s also worth rinsing your mouth out with water or milk afterwards as calcium-rich food and drink can help neutralise acids, as well as chewing sugar-free gum to increase saliva production.”

Fizzy energy drinks may offer a short-term boost, but the long-term effects on your smile can be serious and, in some cases, irreversible. By understanding what’s in your drinks and how they affect your mouth, you can make choices that support a healthy, confident smile today and for years to come.

What to do next

At mydentist, we’re here to support you every step of the way. Many people are tempted by the idea of a non-invasive alternative to cosmetic treatments, but we caught up with Dr Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer here at mydentist, to get her guidance on the risks of wearing these products, especially overnight.

<a10:content type="text">
From at home whitening treatments to glass-skin routines, beauty trends never stop evolving. Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram are filled with quick fix promises of a more sculpted, youthful or “snatched” appearance. But while some trends may be harmless, others can leave a lasting mark on your health.

The latest craze? Shapewear for the face.

The seamless sculpt face wrap, designed to contour the jawline and reduce puffiness, has gone viral since its launch. Many people are tempted by the idea of a non-invasive alternative to cosmetic treatments, but we caught up with Dr Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer here at mydentist, to get her guidance on the risks of wearing these products, especially overnight.

Dentist weighs in on "viral” seamless sculpt face wrap

While beauty trends often promise quick results, it’s important to consider what’s happening beneath the surface. Your teeth and jaw are more delicate than you might think, and even small changes in pressure or posture can have long-term consequences. That’s why expert advice is key before trying products like face wraps.

When asked for her thoughts on overnight face wrapping, Nyree commented: “Sleeping in face wraps may be beneficial to some people looking to reduce the look of puffiness around the neck and jawline, but this will not be a long-term solution. Sleeping with a face wrap may result in weakened jaw muscles from prolonged pressure or even altered resting jaw posture.”

Nyree also explained: “Women are generally more prone to TMJ disorders and jaw tension problems possibly due to hormonal fluctuations making joint tissues more lax or sensitive. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint which connects your skull to your lower jaw and sits just in front of your ear. It’s the joint which allows you to move your jaw side to side, up and down and forward and back, so plays an important role in your oral health.”

The TMJ is one of the most complex joints in the body, working constantly as we chew, speak and even yawn. When it becomes strained or misaligned, it can cause pain, headaches, difficulty opening the mouth and even damage to the teeth. That’s why protecting it is so important.

Wearing face wraps overnight could also increase your risk of developing jaw strain – clenching or grinding with the mouth held shut can lead to bruxism, jaw pain or dental damage.

Top tips to maintain your oral health

If you’re worried about jaw pain or simply want to protect your oral health, here are some simple steps you can take every day:

Keep stress in check – stress can lead to teeth grinding and jaw clenching, so relaxation techniques may help.

Avoid chewing habits – try not to chew ice, pens or fingernails, as this puts extra strain on the jaw joint.

Stick to softer foods if sore – if your jaw feels tender, give it a rest by choosing softer meals for a few days.

Watch your posture – slouching or looking down at your phone for long periods can increase tension in the jaw.

See your dentist – if you notice ongoing pain, clicking or stiffness, book a check-up for tailored advice and support.

Building confidence in your smile

Face shapewear may be the newest viral product, but it’s not the only trend raising concerns. On TikTok, looksmaxxing, the idea of “maximising” your appearance, has become increasingly popular, particularly among young men and boys.

It often starts with positive habits like better hygiene, skincare and teeth brushing, but can escalate to worrying extremes, from severe dieting to steroid use or even breaking facial bones to achieve a more “masculine” look. At its most dangerous, looksmaxxing is tied to harmful online communities that exploit insecurities and encourage unhealthy, sometimes violent behaviours.

Both face wraps and looksmaxxing highlight the same issue: the pressure to constantly change the way we look, often in ways that put our health at risk.

Quick fixes may sound appealing, but true confidence doesn’t come from overnight hacks or extreme trends. It comes from looking after your health and feeling good in your own skin. That means maintaining a good oral health routine and attending regular dental check-ups to ensure your smile is in tip top shape.

What to do next

Nicola Wood, Area Development Manager, commented: “We’ve been working very hard to relocate to a more accessible site in Morley for just over 3 years, so to see the new practice finally open is fantastic. You’re not alone. Whether it’s something you’ve always wanted, or a recent decision sparked by a big life event, clear aligners are helping more people than ever reach the best results possible for their smiles.

At mydentist, we offer a wide range of teeth straightening treatments across our 500+ modern practices in the UK – including clear aligners and other orthodontic options such as fixed braces and cosmetic systems. Whether you’re looking for something subtle and removable, or a more comprehensive treatment plan, our team is here to help you find what works best for you.

Here’s what you need to know about the options available and how we’ll support you every step of the way.

What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are an alternative to fixed braces, designed to straighten your teeth gently and discreetly over time. They’re made from thin, transparent plastic and are custom made to fit snugly over your teeth. You’ll typically wear each aligner for one to two weeks before switching to the next in the series, with each set making small adjustments until your teeth move into their new position. Learn all about clear aligners and how they work on our blog.

Are clear aligners invisible?

If discretion is a top priority, clear aligners are a brilliant option. They’re virtually invisible, comfortable to wear and can be taken out for eating and brushing. But not everyone is suitable for every type of treatment, so your mydentist clinician will always check your suitability before you begin – and recommend the option that’s right for your individual needs.

It’s also worth noting that available treatments may vary by practice, so we’ll talk you through everything you need to know at your first consultation.

ClearCorrect

ClearCorrect is a modern clear aligner system designed to gently move your teeth into a straighter position over time. Made from smooth, stain-resistant plastic, the aligners are almost invisible when worn and can be removed to eat, drink and brush your teeth.

This treatment is ideal for patients with mild to moderate misalignment, including crowding, spacing or bite issues – and treatment time typically takes between 6 and 18 months. You’ll change your aligners every 1–3 weeks and your dentist will keep track of your progress at regular check-ups.

Invisalign

Invisalign is one of the most well-known clear aligner brands – and for good reason. Each aligner is custom-made using 3D technology to fit your teeth precisely and gently guide them into position.

Suitable for everything from minor spacing to more complex movements, Invisalign is a flexible and discreet option for many adults and teens.

At mydentist, Invisalign treatment is available through our comprehensive finance options*, making it more affordable than you might think.

Ready to start your teeth straightening journey?

Your journey at mydentist begins with a consultation and a 3D digital scan. Your dentist will assess your smile, explain your options and create a tailored treatment plan just for you.

All our clear aligner treatments are fully supervised by UK-registered dental professionals – and you’ll receive support every step of the way, including regular check-ups and a retainer at the end of treatment to help keep your new smile in place.

With appointments available at practices across the UK and finance options to spread the cost**, there’s never been a better time to start your smile journey.
While commonly known as allergic rhinitis, hay fever can have a knock-on effect on your oral health, especially during peak pollen months. From dry mouth to unexpected toothache, understanding the link between seasonal allergies and dental symptoms is an important step in protecting your smile.

We caught up with Dr Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer here at mydentist, to get the find out everything you need to know about hay fever and its unexpected impact on your teeth – plus what you should do if you have any concerns.

Hay fever can cause toothache

“One symptom people may experience with hay fever is toothache,” commented Nyree. “This can be caused by a build-up in your sinuses which, in turn, puts pressure on the roots of your teeth, causing discomfort.”

The sinuses sit just above your upper back teeth, so when they become inflamed due to allergies, the pressure can sometimes be felt as a dull ache or tenderness in your teeth. It’s a common but often overlooked symptom of hay fever – and one that many people mistake for a dental issue.

Your dry mouth might be caused by allergies

Hay fever can also cause dry mouth – especially if you’re experiencing congestion and find yourself breathing through your mouth more often.

“This could have a knock-on effect on your oral health,” commented Nyree, “as saliva is essential in preventing oral health issues and combating bacteria. Having a dry mouth may cause symptoms such as bad breath and an increased chance of developing cavities.”

Saliva helps neutralise acids, wash away food particles and protect against tooth decay. So, when allergy symptoms or medication (such as antihistamines) reduce your saliva levels, it can create the perfect conditions for bacteria to grow.

Thankfully, there are some simple steps you can take to protect your oral health during allergy season.

“There is a wide range of simple steps you can take to improve these symptoms,” continued Nyree. “If you are experiencing dryness in your mouth, make sure you drink plenty of water to counteract this. If you’re experiencing a mild toothache due to congestion and hay fever, over-the-counter antihistamines should help to alleviate any discomfort.”

Staying hydrated, brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and using an alcohol-free mouthwash can all help maintain your oral hygiene – even if you're feeling under the weather.

Nyree continued: “However, if you are experiencing toothache, then it’s recommended that you contact your dentist to ensure that it is connected to hay fever, and that it isn’t a sign of an underlying problem.”

Research says there’s even a link between poor oral health and allergies

Research also supports a strong link between allergic rhinitis and poor oral health. In a large study of over 136,000 teenagers, those reporting multiple oral health symptoms, such as sore or bleeding gums, toothache, and bad breath, were about 1.4 times more likely to have allergic rhinitis compared to those without any symptoms.

This finding suggests that allergies like hay fever aren't just making you sneeze –they’re tied to real oral health issues. Inflammation, mouth breathing and decreased saliva play a role, meaning if you're suffering from hay fever and start to notice gum discomfort, tooth pain or persistent bad breath, it's not just coincidence- it may signal a need for extra attention to your oral care routine during allergy season.

Look after your teeth and gums by maintaining a regular oral health routine. Bursh your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, and regular dental check-ups.

Is hay fever affecting your oral health?

While hay fever might start with a sneeze, its effects can reach much further – including your mouth. By understanding how allergies affect your oral health and taking steps to manage your symptoms, you can keep your teeth and gums protected through the seasons.

And remember, if you're ever unsure whether your symptoms are allergy-related or something more, we're here to help you maintain a healthy oral health. If you suspect that hay fever is affecting your smile – talk to your dentist and explore your options. If you're new to mydentist and looking for a practice, find your local mydentist practice today. To help set the record straight, we caught up with Dr Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer at mydentist, to debunk some of the most common misconceptions she hears from patients when it comes to their dental health.

<a10:content type="text">
When it comes to looking after your smile, there’s no shortage of advice online – but how do you know what to trust?

From viral TikTok trends to hearsay passed down through generations, dental myths can be confusing at best and damaging at worst. To help set the record straight, we caught up with Dr Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer at mydentist, to debunk some of the most common misconceptions she hears from patients when it comes to their dental health.

Myth 1: Mouthwash can replace brushing

“This is one myth I often have to correct patients about,” commented Nyree. “Mouthwash can be a helpful supplement, but it doesn’t remove plaque or food particles like brushing and flossing does. Think of it as a boost and not a substitute for an effective oral hygiene routine.”

Myth 2: Hormones can’t impact your oral health

“Hormones can significantly impact your oral health – hormonal fluctuations, such as those occurring during pregnancy or menopause, will influence the health of your gums, teeth, and overall oral hygiene,” Nyree commented.

She continued: “For example, higher levels of progesterone during pregnancy can make it easier for bacteria to thrive and cause tooth decay. When it comes to the menopause, lower oestrogen levels can lead to decreased bone density and a susceptibility to gum disease.”

Myth 3: Ozempic impacts your teeth

“Ozempic doesn’t directly have an impact on your teeth, but it’s important to be aware of the potential side effects, which can affect your oral health,” Nyree commented.

She continued: “Ozempic can slow down your saliva production and flow, you may experience a dry mouth when using the weight loss jab. Saliva plays an integral role in managing natural bacteria and pH levels in the mouth, helping to neutralise acids and keeping your teeth protected against decay.

“If you experience a consistently dry mouth, you’ll be at an increased risk of developing gum disease or tooth decay. If you care experiencing dry mouth as a side effect of using Ozempic, ensure you sip water little and often to encourage saliva flow. You can also chew on sugar-free gum to encourage saliva production, which you may find helpful.”

Myth 4: Good teeth are genetic

While some people are naturally more prone to tooth decay or gum disease, Nyree stresses that genetics aren’t the full story.

“Genetics can play a significant role in the health of your teeth. However, it's important to note that genetics alone won’t determine the health of your teeth — lifestyle habits and oral hygiene practices are also major factors.

“It’s important to remember that some people are genetically more prone to conditions such as gum disease or tooth decay, due to how their immune system responds to bacteria in the mouth. If you think you may be predisposed to these conditions, contact your dentist for tailored support and advice.”

Myth 5: You don’t need to floss every day

“For optimal oral health, I would always recommend that my patients floss every day,” commented Nyree.

“Flossing is essential for maintaining good oral hygiene as it helps remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth and along the gum line – the areas in which brushing can sometimes miss. Flossing daily helps prevent gum disease and reduces the risk of cavities and tooth loss.”

A final word from Nyree

“With so much information – and misinformation – circulating online, it’s no surprise that some patients are left feeling uncertain on best oral health practises,” Nyree commented.

“Misconceptions can lead to poor habits and long-term dental issues and so, it’s important patients seek professional advice if unsure of how to correctly look after their oral health.”

At mydentist, we suggest staying mindful of your oral hygiene routine, making smart dietary choices and attending regular appointments with your dental care provider to prevent most common oral health concerns.

Are you ready to take control of your oral health?

They've become the solution for many patients who struggle with their smile – allowing for a more discreet way to straighten teeth.

But do clear aligners actually work? The answer is, absolutely, when used correctly and for the right dental conditions. In this guide, we'll explore what clear aligners are, how aligners work and the journey of treatment. By the end, you'll have a solid understanding of clear aligners and how they can transform your smile.

What are clear aligners?

With brands like Invisalign, ClearCorrect and many more taking the nation by storm and clear aligner treatment becoming progressively more commonplace in dental practices - you'd be hard pressed to find a person who'd ask, "what are clear aligners?"

That's why at mydentist, we offer various clear aligner options tailored to meet distinct orthodontic needs. While some are perfect for mild to moderate misalignments, others address more intricate dental issues. As the UK's leading provider of dentistry, we ensure we offer clear aligner treatment to those patients craving faster treatment times and enhanced comfort.

If you're not yet familiar, clear aligners, often referred to as invisible aligners, or simply aligners, are a modern solution for straightening teeth. Made from transparent plastic, these clear trays fit snugly over your teeth, gently guiding them into their new positions. Many prefer them over traditional braces due to their near-invisibility and comfort. Clear aligners are removable, making it easier for patients to maintain their oral hygiene and reducing the need to avoid certain types of food and drinks.

How do aligners work?

So, how do aligners work? Clear aligners function by applying gentle, consistent pressure to reposition teeth gradually. Each aligner is precisely crafted to fit over your teeth, and they are switched every few weeks to continue the incremental movement of specific teeth.

The process begins with an in-depth consultation with your dentist, including digital scans or impressions, to create a personalised treatment plan. The aligners must be worn for 20 to 22 hours daily, only being removed for eating and cleaning. Regular check-ups at mydentist ensure the treatment stays on track.

Do clear aligners work?

Now you know what clear aligners are and how they affect your teeth - you need to know the next most important thing: Do clear aligners work? The simple answer is yes!

Clear aligners have proven to be a successful orthodontic solution, with numerous studies supporting their effectiveness. Research shows that they can deliver results comparable to traditional braces in mild to moderate misalignment cases. Remember that clear aligners need to be worn as directed by your clinician to ensure the success of your treatment.

Dental issues clear aligners can address

Clear aligners are effective for a variety of dental issues, particularly mild to moderate cases such as overcrowding, gaps and minor bite problems. However, clear aligners have limitations. More complex cases involving significant overbites or underbites might require alternative treatments, like braces on the back of teeth or even surgical interventions. A consultation with a mydentist professional is crucial to determine if invisible teeth braces are suitable for your needs.

Benefits of clear aligner treatment

For many, the fact you can take your clear aligners in and out and their near invisibility is often the most attractive benefit. As clear aligner are also removable, they can simplify oral hygiene routines and provide a more comfortable eating experience in contrast to fixed braces.

The only “drawbacks” of clear aligners are that they must be worn consistently to be effective and that not all orthodontic issues can be treated with clear aligners; some patients may need braces on the back of teeth for complex cases.

The 5 steps to a straighter smile

Step 1 - Show us your smile: At your consultation, we’ll discuss what you do and don’t like about your smile. We’ll explain the process in detail and check you are suitable for treatment through an oral health check-up.

Step 2 – Have your scan taken: You will have a smile assessment with a UK registered dentist. Following a 3D digital scan or taking impressions of your teeth, we will create your unique treatment plan.

Step 3 – Collect your aligners: You will collect your first set of clear aligners, and the clinician will show you how to fit them. They will also give you all the information you need about how to care for them and your teeth.

Step 4 - Straighten at home: Once your first aligner has been fitted, you will change your aligners regularly, as directed by your treatment plan. We will monitor your progress regularly to ensure you get the best possible results for your treatment.

Step 5 – Aftercare: Once your treatment plan is complete, you will receive a free set of retainers to wear at night as well as a bespoke long-term plan to help maintain your new smile.

Ready to start clear aligner treatment?

You may have recently seen news about proposed changes to the UK’s immigration rules. If you’re currently overseas and thinking about coming to work as a dentist in the UK, announcements like this can be worrying so we thought we’d try to help you understand it a little better.

At mydentist, we’re proud to support one of the largest communities of international dentists in the UK. Our people values – we respect each other, we grow together, we achieve as one – guide everything we do, and we’re committed to helping our international colleagues feel welcomed, empowered and supported every step of the way.

We’ve helped hundreds of international dentists start successful careers in the UK and we’re continuing to recruit talented dentists from around the world.

What’s changing – and what could it mean for you?

The proposals set out in the government’s Immigration White Paper are not finalised, and we expect ongoing discussions to take place over the coming months. But based on what’s been announced so far, the impact on international dentists is minimal.

Here are some of the key points we think it’s useful for you to know:

The new minimum skill level for visas will be RQF6 (degree level). Dentists already meet this requirement by holding a BDS or equivalent qualification – so there’s no change here.

Minimum earnings thresholds are increasing. We will have to wait for the new thresholds to be announced, but the current earnings threshold for dentists is already above the existing threshold so this is unlikely to change anything for sponsorship.

The required English language level for skilled workers is B2. For registration with the GDC, a higher level is already required (equivalent to C1), so dentists should already meet this standard.

New English language requirements are being introduced for dependants. This includes meeting A1 level when applying for a visa and progressing to B2 over time.

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) applications may now take 10 years. However, the government has suggested that individuals who contribute to the UK economy and society may be able to shorten this period.

Our commitment to international dentists

We’re actively engaging with the UK Government to ensure that international dentists can continue to build long and successful careers here. These proposals are still under review, and we’ll keep monitoring the situation closely – keeping you updated every step of the way.

If you’re just starting your journey, there are still lots of routes to join us. With increased capacity on the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE), there are more opportunities than ever to take your next step.

Whether you’re preparing for the ORE or the Licence in Dental Surgery (LDS), or already registered with the GDC, we’re here to support you.

Talk to our team

If you have any questions or concerns, or if you’d just like to speak to someone about what the changes might mean for you, please don’t hesitate to contact us at international@mydentist.co.uk.

We’re here to help – and we’re proud to support international dentists at every stage of their journey.

As one of the largest and most diverse orthodontic networks in the UK, we’re proud to support a community of clinicians, nurses, therapists and practice teams who are dedicated to improving lives through outstanding orthodontic care.

Celebrating World Orthodontic Health Day

This World Orthodontic Health Day, we’re shining a spotlight on just a few of the passionate people who are helping to shape the future of orthodontics at mydentist – and celebrating the stories, journeys and careers that make the division, and mydentist, so special to them. Their words reflect the ambition, respect and care that underpin everything we do.

Their experiences reflect the mydentist people values – we respect each other, we grow together, we achieve as one - and guide the way we work and deliver outstanding care to our patients every day.

These values are more than words; they shape how we develop careers, create supportive environments and empower our teams to thrive. Whether it's the drive to learn, the dedication to patient care or the pride in supporting colleagues, the voices in this blog perfectly show how our people values come to life – and why they matter so much in our orthodontic division.

Michelle Shambrook, Divisional Director – Orthodontic Field Operations

“The orthodontic division of mydentist has gone from strength to strength since it was formed in 2019. Recognising the unique needs of orthodontic patients, we have continued to adapt to ensure we can offer the service and treatment outcomes our patients deserve. We deliver hundreds of hours of treatments each year, supporting a countless number of children and adults through their orthodontic care.

I could not be prouder of the team that support our orthodontic practices, providing clinical and operational guidance, financial, people and marketing assistance, practical support with processing & procedures and encouragement in all areas of growth and development.

I am most proud of our practice teams, our outstanding managers, our brilliant nurses and orthodontic therapists, our skilled reception teams, talented treatment coordinators and our accomplished clinicians who take such good care of our patients and our businesses day in day out.

I am so very grateful to each member of our exceptional team, who work so hard to look after our patients and each other. A very happy World Orthodontic Health Day to you all.”

Michelle’s words truly reflect the care and respect that our teams show each other and our patients every day.

Sally Alwan – Clinical Development Advisor

“It’s so important that clinicians feel heard and valued. Having representation – a clinical director, a development advisor – means there’s always someone who understands what’s happening day-to-day in practice. Someone who knows what you need.

At mydentist, we're here to support clinicians. If there’s a new protocol or a new piece of kit, you’ve got someone to go to. It’s not just talk – it’s acted on. With over 500 practices, we’re the largest dental corporate in the UK. If you’ve got an idea or want to progress, this is the best place to do it. I can organise my clinics in a way that works for me. I don’t feel overwhelmed – and that’s down to the systems and the people I work with.”

Sally’s experience highlights our ambition to continuously improve and our passion for supporting professional growth.

Tomos Crandon – Specialist Orthodontist

“Working in a practice with mydentist is always memorable and always fulfilling. You’re a totally independent clinician, with a huge network of people around you. It’s a lot less lonely than working for an independent partnership or practice.

They’ve supported me with changing practices for something more convenient, offered different hours and new teams – but always with the same level of trust in my clinical decisions.

If my practice manager doesn’t know the answer, there’s always someone else in the network who does. There are so many people in senior roles who are looking after you and encouraging you to thrive.”

Tomos’s story is a brilliant example of the respect we have for clinicians’ autonomy and the care we take in making sure they’re never alone in their journey.

Rachael Hartley – Orthodontic Therapist and Clinical Development Advisor

“At our practice, we work in what's called a polyclinic setting – where we have three chairs in one surgery. We also have two separate private surgeries. I find it keeps the atmosphere fun, friendly and fast-paced. Especially because you have orthodontic nurses, orthodontic therapists and clinicians all working in the same space.

I'm so passionate about what I do, and I love working as an orthodontic therapist – so it's fantastic. I'd advise anyone to apply for a role in the mydentist orthodontic division. The support network is there to help – you can build the career that you want. Being an orthodontic therapist is so rewarding; it makes me feel like my hard work is worth it and I love to see that.”

Rachael’s enthusiasm reflects the passion and ambition that drive our orthodontic teams to thrive.

Emma Simpson – Newly Qualified Orthodontic Therapist

“I was inspired to start my apprenticeship as I love to learn new skills and knowledge – and I find orthodontics fascinating. I thought I’d struggle to keep up with my studies alongside working, but the way the apprenticeship was delivered made everything feel more manageable. I was still able to maintain a good work/life balance.

Completing my apprenticeship has given me a new career which I can’t wait to build on. In the future, I’d love to mentor or teach. I'll hopefully pass on my knowledge to other colleagues and students.”

Emma’s journey is a great example of how ambition is nurtured at mydentist – with support, care and respect at every step.

A closing message from Clinical Director, Danielle Rodgers

Last, and certainly not least, we're closing our celebration with a message from Danielle Rodgers, Clinical Director, here at mydentist: “As World Orthodontic Health Day approaches on May 15th, I would like to take this opportunity to express our immense gratitude to our incredible orthodontic practice teams. Their commitment to improving smiles and enhancing oral health is truly commendable.

Every day, our orthodontic teams work tirelessly to provide excellent care, ensuring that each patient receives personalised treatment that achieves the best possible outcomes. Their compassion and dedication make a significant difference in the lives of our patients, helping them gain confidence and enjoy better oral health. I am proud to have such talented and passionate teams.”

Danielle’s words echo the mydentist people values perfectly – passion for patient care, ambition to grow, respect for our teams and the communities we serve, and care at the heart of everything we do.

At mydentist, we understand that behind every tooth straightening treatment plan is a team of passionate professionals who care deeply about what they do. If you're an orthodontic professional or specialist dentist looking to join a network that supports your development, values your clinical voice and gives you the tools to succeed, there’s no better time to explore a role in orthodontics at mydentist. Register your interest on our website today.

That's why it's interesting to discover that in some countries your winning smile may not be taken as a sign of confidence.

Much like the perceptions of what a smile means shift with cultures, so does what is considered desirable. Some things, like the clothes we wear, the television we consume or the music we listen to, we expect to be affected by the ever-changing march of trends.

But did you know that our dental work is also subject to trends, both wide-reaching and micro? Join us as we find out what your smile says about you both in the UK and abroad and we look at the rise and fall of some popular dental trends from the last decade, such as the Hollywood Smile, yaeba teeth and the London gap.

What does your smile mean?

Whether you want to appear warm, welcoming or simply be polite to a stranger, the British public are fond of a smile. Although you never know exactly what someone is thinking, here in the UK, a smile is often used liberally. Our neighbours across the pond in the USA, treat smiling much in the same way. But did you know the reason we're so fond of a friendly grin may be due to the many diverse cultures celebrated here in the UK?

One study, from Princeton university, suggests that countries where the present-day population descends from many source countries, or more simply has a larger immigrant population – like the UK & the USA – are more likely to be more emotionally expressive. This suggests that our penchant for a smile may have originally been an extension of our cultural diversity and a way for us to connect with our neighbours, friends and family.

How are smiles perceived worldwide?

Here in the UK, people who smile are usually considered more favourably than those who don't. One study suggests that receiving a smile can change how we perceive a person, we may consider them happier, more attractive, competent and friendly. However commonplace the culture of smiling is in the UK & USA, it's not as universal as you think, with many countries across the world having a completely different styles and reactions to those who grin and bear it.

We know there are countries famous for their stoic expressions, and many believe that smiling is considered a sign of typical negative traits - with countries like Russia, Norway, Poland, South Korea and Japan falling into this category.

There are even some cultural quirks that may land Brits abroad in some hot water, such as the practice of naki-warai in Japan, the act of smiling when you're angry, upset, sad or embarrassed. Or the similar method of smiling to express fear, tension or regret in Thailand. We've already mentioned Russia, but if you visit it would be wise to bear in mind that smiling is typically reserved for acquaintances – a contrast to the USA where smiling is actively encouraged to evoke friendliness.

Smiles around the world

It's not just the perception of smiling that shifts with your culture, background and upbringing - but also your opinion of what types of smiles are attractive.

The Hollywood smile: If you've read a magazine, visited the cinema or consumed any of the ever-growing content available on social media platforms in the last few decades, you'll have been exposed to countless examples of the Hollywood smile.

Best defined as a set of perfectly straight, gleaming white teeth, the Hollywood smile is usually achieved through having your own teeth filed down and a set of porcelain veneers fitted over the top. Although originally not easily accessible to the average patient, veneers, both porcelain and composite, have been become more popular in the UK over the last few years.

However, despite the desirable pull of a perfectly white, well-aligned smile, it seems that the public are moving away from the Hollywood smile, opting for less invasive treatment options like composite bonding, clear aligners and whitening treatments to achieve a similar look with more natural results.

Yaeba teeth: Orthodontic treatment is very popular in the UK, with many people undergoing treatment during their teen years to align their smile. Options like clear aligners and fixed braces are readily available, with many people opting to straighten their teeth ahead of special occasions, such as weddings. But did you know that snaggle teeth – something that is often addressed with orthodontic treatment in the UK – are considered desirable abroad?

Considered cute and youthful, yaeba, meaning “double tooth", is a Japanese beauty trend in which teeth are made to look more fanglike. The look was incredibly popular in Japan for a significant period of time, with many celebrities sporting the signature snaggle toothed smile.

The yaeba look can be achieved naturally and is typically caused by delayed baby teeth or overcrowding of the mouth. Those who had natural snaggle teeth would opt to keep their natural look, while those who weren't so lucky would invest in cosmetic dental treatment to achieve the look they wanted.

Although falling out of popularity, with many Japanese celebrities undergoing corrective treatment to reduce the appearance of their “fangs”, many still love the look!

London gap: Although popularised in the UK & USA by celebrities like Madonna, Georgia May Jagger, Vanessa Paradis and Aimee Lou Wood, from season 3 of The White Lotus, having a gap between your front teeth has long been a global trend.

Also called diastema, having a gap tooth is another feature that is often corrected with orthodontic treatment. However, in many cultures worldwide, you may find individuals choosing to rock their gap – especially in countries like France and Nigeria.

In French, having a gap between your teeth is called dents du bonheur, which literally means “lucky teeth.” Similarly, in Nigerian culture, it's considered a sign of beauty and luck. In fact, in many African cultures, it can be a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Gapped teeth even have their place in mythology, appearing in the jengu, a beautiful water sprit from the traditional beliefs of the Sawabantu groups of Cameroon.

You can be born with a gap between your teeth, but it can also be caused by your teeth shifting as your age, gum disease or even pressing your tongue to the back of your teeth.

Teeth sharpening: Pointy incisors might incite flashbacks of last year’s Halloween party in the minds of most Brits, but did you know that the practice of sharpening your teeth is considered a cultural tradition in many parts of the world?

The practice can be found in Bali, as part of a coming-of-age ritual, to indicate a person is ready to consider marriage. In the Mentawai Islands of Indonesia, young women can choose to sharpen their teeth as a rite of passage and to enhance their beauty. Thinning and shortening incisors is also common in Java, Sumatra and Borneo. In African cultures, mainly in Cameroon, Congo, Guinea, Zaire and Uganda, teeth are sometimes sharpened to resemble those of a crocodile in a practice called akuha and in Tanzania members of the Makonde tribe chip off part of the upper and lower incisors to make teeth appear less sharp and more ped shaped.

Although the practice is unlikely to trend in the UK any time soon, there have been cases of people in the UK and USA choosing to undergo dental treatment to achieve this look – and although it may seem unusual to most Brits, it's undoubtedly true that teeth sharpening remains an incredibly important cultural tradition to many people worldwide.

From the Hollywood smile to yaeba teeth and even teeth sharpening, it’s clear that dental trends and the meaning of a smile vary widely across the world. What’s celebrated in one culture might be corrected in another, showing just how diverse our perceptions of beauty and self-expression can be.

Whether you prefer a polished, natural look or embrace your unique quirks, your smile is as individual as you are – shaped by personal choice, cultural influences and even the trends of the time. It’s fascinating to see how something as universal as a smile can tell such different stories across the globe.

Whether it occurs during the day or at night, understanding the causes of bruxism and how to manage it is essential for maintaining good oral health. In this guide, we'll explore the causes, symptoms, and treatments for teeth grinding, advise when it's time to seek help from a dental professional, and reveal a surprising habit that may be making your symptoms worse!

What are the symptoms of teeth grinding?

If you're grinding your teeth, it may be going unnoticed. While your dentist may be able to tell if you're grinding your teeth from their condition, you may not realise that you're experiencing symptoms. If you are experiencing:

Jaw pain or stiffness, especially after waking

Frequent headaches or earaches

Worn, flattened, or chipped teeth

Increased tooth sensitivity

Clicking or popping in the jaw joint

Tooth grinding could be the cause.

What causes teeth grinding?

Stress and anxiety: The most common cause of teeth grinding is stress – something that has the potential to impact all of us at some point in our lives. Stress and anxiety often lead individuals to grind their teeth unconsciously, especially during times of high tension. This can result in jaw pain, headaches and disturbed sleep.

Sleep disorders: Conditions like sleep apnoea and insomnia can disrupt normal sleep patterns, making teeth grinding during sleep more likely. You may wake up with sore jaws or teeth without realising the underlying sleep issue.

Lifestyle habits: High caffeine or alcohol intake, smoking, and poor sleep hygiene may all contribute to or worsen teeth grinding.

Certain medications: Certain medications, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), have been linked to increased teeth grinding. Stimulants like caffeine can also heighten the risk.

When should I see a dentist about teeth grinding?

You should book an appointment with your dentist if:

You experience persistent jaw pain, headaches, or tooth sensitivity

Your teeth appear chipped, flat, or worn down

You struggle to sleep due to jaw discomfort or clenching at night

Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent long-term damage and protect your overall oral health.

How to stop teeth grinding

Lifestyle changes to stop teeth grinding: How you can be treated when you grind your teeth depends on the cause of your condition. If you're stressed, relaxation techniques like mindfulness, deep breathing, yoga or meditation can help reduce the tension that contributes to grinding. Engaging in hobbies and regular exercise can also provide stress relief. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and other psychological therapies can often help address stress and anxiety, which are often at the root of bruxism. If you have an irregular sleep schedule or poor sleep quality, establishing a consistent sleep routine and aiming for 7–9 hours of rest each night can be beneficial. Limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption, especially before bed, can lower anxiety levels and improve sleep quality.

Dental treatment for teeth grinding: If lifestyle changes aren't enough, a dentist can recommend targeted solutions. Worn while sleeping, a custom-fitted mouthguard creates a protective barrier between your upper and lower teeth. This helps reduce wear, prevent damage, and relieve jaw pain. At mydentist, we can provide custom mouthguards designed to fit your bite comfortably and securely – visit our mouthguard page to learn more. In some cases, muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety medication, or even targeted injections may be recommended to ease muscle tension and reduce grinding.

Is chewing gum bad for your teeth?

Sugar-free gum can be a great way to freshen your breath between cleaning your teeth. It may come as a surprise to learn that but chewing gum can worsen teeth grinding symptoms. The constant chewing motion can overwork your jaw muscles, increase tension and make grinding more likely. If you grind your teeth, it's best to avoid gum and try other ways to freshen your breath – like using mouthwash or rinsing with water after eating.

I'm concerned about teeth grinding, what should I do?

Teeth grinding can seriously damage your mouth if left untreated, but it's a manageable condition with the right approach.

At mydentist, we're here to help you maintain a healthy smile, free from pain and damage. If you suspect you may be grinding your teeth – especially at night – don't wait. Talk to your dentist and explore your options. Teething can be a difficult period – not just for little ones but for tired parents and carers too.

At mydentist, we know how important it is to support families through every stage of their dental journey, starting from day one. So, if you've been wondering “when do babies start teething?”, we've got the answers you need.

Join us as we talk with Ingrid Perry MBE, Oral Health Prevention Lead here at mydentist, to break down everything you need to know about teething – from the first signs and common symptoms to how to ease discomfort and keep your baby’s mouth healthy right from the start.

When do babies start teething?

“Teething can begin at any time between three and twelve months,” explains Ingrid Perry MBE, Oral Health Prevention Lead at mydentist. “Most babies will cut their first tooth around the six-month mark, and the lower central incisors – the bottom front teeth – are usually the first to come through, followed by the upper front teeth.

By the time your child is around three years old, they’ll typically have a full set of 20 primary teeth, often referred to as milk teeth. These will eventually be replaced by their adult teeth as they grow.

It’s important to remember that every baby is different. The timing of teething doesn’t reflect anything about your baby’s development. Some little ones are even born with a tooth – known as a natal tooth – while others don’t start teething until after their first birthday. Both are perfectly normal.”

What are the signs of teething?

Not all babies show obvious signs, but many do experience some discomfort as their teeth begin to push through the gums. Common signs of teething include:

Excessive dribbling – often soaking through bibs and clothing

Red, swollen gums – which may be tender to the touch

Chewing and biting – on hands, toys, or anything they can reach

Fussiness or irritability – especially around naps or feeding times

Disrupted sleep – due to soreness or general discomfort

Flushed cheeks – often on just one side

A slightly raised temperature – but not a high fever

It’s a common myth that teething causes high fevers, diarrhoea or rashes. While teething can lower your baby’s resistance slightly, these symptoms usually indicate an unrelated illness. If your baby has a high temperature (over 38°C), prolonged diarrhoea or seems unusually unwell, it’s best to contact your GP or health visitor.

How can I help soothe my teething baby?

“Watching your baby cope with sore gums can be upsetting, but there are some really simple ways to help ease their discomfort,” says Ingrid Perry MBE, Oral Health Prevention Lead at mydentist.

“A firm rubber or silicone teether is often really effective, especially if it’s been cooled in the fridge – just don’t freeze it, as that can make it too hard and potentially harm the gums. You can also try a chilled, damp flannel or even a cold spoon, always under supervision.

Another option is a gentle gum massage – just use a clean finger to apply light pressure. And sometimes, it’s as simple as extra cuddles and reassurance. A calm, loving environment can go a long way when your baby is feeling unsettled.

If your little one is really struggling, your pharmacist can recommend sugar-free teething gels or age-appropriate pain relief like paracetamol or ibuprofen – as long as your baby is over three months old and you follow the correct dosage.”

When should my baby see the dentist?

“We recommend bringing your baby for their first dental check-up by the age of one, or within six months of their first tooth coming through – whichever comes first,” says Ingrid Perry MBE, Oral Health Prevention Lead at mydentist.

“These early visits are really valuable. They help your little one get used to the sights and sounds of the dental practice and give parents a great opportunity to ask questions or raise any concerns about brushing, feeding, or fluoride use.

During the appointment, your dentist will check your baby’s gums, teeth and jaw development, and offer personalised advice to support their oral health as they grow. It’s a small step that makes a big difference in building healthy habits for life.”

What comes after teething?

It's undeniable that teething is tough. But remember, it's also temporary. A good oral health routine, however, is for life! At mydentist, we’re here to support families every step of the way – from those very first teeth to a confident, healthy smile for life. We encourage parents and carers to help their children create good oral health habits in their early years, to prepare them for the future. If you're a parent or carer who'd like support with understanding and caring for your child's oral health, you can find free Kids Club resources on the mydentist website.

The theme for World Health Day 2025 is healthy beginnings, hopeful futures and will be a yearlong campaign focusing on maternal and newborn health.

Dental advice for pregnant women

For International Women’s Day 2025, we celebrated the people working at mydentist and our patients who identify as women with a series of blogs that explored topics relevant to dentistry in relation to women’s health. These blogs not only celebrated the achievements of women at mydentist but also provided advice on maintaining your oral health in key stages of life, such as childhood and pregnancy.

We wanted to share, once more, the valuable insight of one of the many women at mydentist contributing her expertise to addressing oral health concerns across the UK, Dr Nyree Whitley, our Chief Clinical Officer here at mydentist.

Looking after your dental health when you’re pregnant

Looking after your dental health when you are pregnant is incredibly important. The body goes through many different changes during pregnancy, with fluctuations in your hormones being one of the main changes.

“Hormone changes attributed to events such as pregnancy can lead to gingivitis, a common gum infection. It’s perfectly treatable if found early, but if it is left untreated, then gingivitis can lead to periodontal disease, which can cause further complications such as tooth loss.” Nyree commented, when asked about the adverse effects of hormonal fluctuations on our dental health.

What dental concerns may affect pregnant women?

During pregnancy, increases in your hormonal levels can affect how your body reacts to plaque. This can lead to swollen, sore or bleeding gums, commonly referred to as gingivitis, or to the more serious form of gum disease known as periodontitis.

Although gingivitis in pregnant people is not usually severe, with lasting damage to the to the bone, soft tissue and gum surrounding and supporting a tooth being rare, it’s vital you look after your oral health during pregnancy.

Recognising the signs of gum disease

During pregnancy, changes like swollen or bleeding gums are common, but they should not be ignored. Other symptoms to watch for include:

Pain when chewing

Bad breath

Receding gums

Loose teeth

If any of these arise, it is important to visit your dental professional as soon as possible for treatment.

When is the best time for a pregnant woman to receive periodontal treatment?

The BSP and EDP advise that even if you’re not presenting with any signs or symptoms of a dental condition, you should still seek a consultation with your dentist, dental therapist or dental hygienist as soon as possible so you can take appropriate preventive measures to preserve your oral health. During your appointment, you can ask about the appropriate plaque removal measures and tools you should use during your pregnancy to maintain your teeth.

Safe dental treatment options for pregnant women

If you are diagnosed with gingivitis or periodontitis, it's important not worry. Treatment for gum disease is generally safe during pregnancy and with treatment; gum disease can be managed effectively.

The risks of delaying treatment for gum disease while you are pregnant far outweigh any potential issues caused by the treatment itself. However, treatments like deep scaling (cleaning below the gum line) are usually best avoided in the first trimester. However, it can be safely performed during the second trimester.

Having dental X-rays and anaesthesia while pregnant

For pregnant women, dental X-rays and local anaesthesia are generally safe and do not pose any additional risks to either the mother or baby. However, it is always a good idea to inform your dentist about your pregnancy so they are aware of your condition and can tailor your treatment.

Painkillers and antibiotics for pregnant patients

Common painkillers and antibiotics used during periodontal treatments are typically safe for pregnant women. However, certain medications, like tetracyclines and metronidazole, should be avoided. Inform your clinician if you are pregnant so they can ensure you are receiving the best care possible.

What to do if you're concerned about your dental health as a pregnant woman

When asked about the best approach to dental care for pregnant women, Nyree commented: “Regular check-ups and a proactive approach to oral hygiene can help prevent minor issues from becoming major health concerns.”

If you have concerns about your dental health and you are pregnant, we recommend contacting your practice to ask for advice or arrange an appointment with your dentist. You may want to consider this if you notice any changes in your gums, teeth or even lips.

As part of our ongoing commitment to innovation, we continuously support dental practices embracing new technologies.

In this episode of Know the Drill, Dale Flanagan, Neil Simpkin and Jess Patel Barnes share how they’re helping practices transition to digital dentistry with the adoption of intraoral scanners.

Supporting the transition to digital dentistry

Dale Flanagan, who plays a central role in the intraoral scanner rollout, begins by outlining the importance of support managers in the adoption process, commenting: "What mydentist has recognised is that after deploying scanners, many practices need more than just training and documentation. They need added assistance."

Dale emphasises that it’s not only about providing the technology but offering ongoing support to ensure its seamless integration into existing workflows. The support managers are described as "intraoral scanner firefighters," always ready to assist practices encountering challenges during the adoption process.

Overcoming reluctance to change

Neil Simpkin discusses the difficulties that arise when trying to encourage some clinicians to embrace new technologies: "That reluctance to change from some areas means it can be hard for those who are willing to embrace it to understand why there’s hesitation," Neil adds.

He highlights the importance of empathy and understanding in overcoming these challenges, stressing the need to approach reluctant clinicians in a way that shows them the tangible benefits of digital tools.

"We do need to accept that resistance is there and take a step back," Neil says. "We need to show clinicians what can be achieved, put that clinical approach in and be on the ground with them."

Neil also believes the key to breaking down resistance is showing clinicians the real, hands-on benefits of digital dentistry. "Sometimes clinicians just need it from another clinician, and that’s where myself, Jess and the rest of the team can really help."

A personalised approach to learning

Jess Patel Barnes, a regional clinical development advisor, shares her approach to supporting clinicians in the Southeast. Her role involves providing tailored, one-on-one support to ensure clinicians are comfortable with their new technology. "I’ve got a scanner, I’ve got models, and we do a lot of click-by-click demonstrations to show clinicians how they can embrace this," Jess explains. She recognises that learning new technology takes time and often requires reassurance.

"For me, gathering the knowledge before diving in has worked really well," Jess says. "There’s a whole host of information available to help you out." She stresses the importance of having accessible resources like webinars and troubleshooting guides, which make the transition to digital dentistry more manageable for busy clinicians.

The journey to building confidence and competence

As the episode draws to a close, Jess offers a motivating message about the journey of adopting new technology. "It’s a journey. You’re not going to pick up a scanner and be proficient straight away," she notes. "You’ve got to go through that journey. We’ve all trained, we’ve all been on this at some level, and this is no different." Jess’s advice is clear: take things one step at a time, and the benefits will come.

Neil echoes this sentiment, reinforcing the need to engage with new technology sooner rather than later. "We can’t maintain the analogue pathway indefinitely. It’s coming. The sooner you engage with it, the quicker you’ll start seeing the benefits."

Dale also encourages clinicians to embrace the technology, urging them not to be afraid. "Just pick up the scanner and scan," he says. The message is simple: digital dentistry is here to stay, and with the right support, clinicians can confidently adapt to the future of dentistry.

A future-focused approach to digital dentistry

Dale, Neil and Jess all agree that digital dentistry is not just about keeping up with trends. It’s about improving patient outcomes, enhancing diagnostics and streamlining workflow efficiency. With the right support, dental professionals can overcome the challenges of adopting new technology and unlock its full potential.

Oral diseases are among the most common noncommunicable diseases worldwide, affecting an estimated 3.5 billion people. This year we partnered with Tempdent to raise awareness about children's oral health for World Oral Health Day - and what we as dental professionals, can do to support the parents and carers of children in helping their families develop good oral health routines for life.

Ingrid Perry MBE, Oral Health Prevention Lead at mydentist, in partnership with Tempdent

As Ingrid Perry, Oral Health Prevention Lead at mydentist, highlights below, early intervention and preventative care are essential in tackling oral health complications in children. With the Level 4 Oral Health Practitioner Apprenticeship, Tempdent are helping to expand the workforce equipped to deliver this care to our communities. Graduates of the program will play an important role in preventing tooth decay and promoting healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

The apprenticeship focuses on oral health education, enabling practitioners to connect with individuals, families and young children, including underserved communities. Teaching oral hygiene techniques, offering advice on healthy eating and delivering preventive care, Oral Health Practitioners can actively reduce health disparities and help address the oral health challenges faced by many children across the UK.

Ingrid Perry MBE:

As dental professionals, we play a vital role in shaping children’s oral health from an early age. The habits they form in childhood often last a lifetime, making early intervention, preventive care, and clear communication with families essential in reducing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental concerns. Despite the strides we’ve made to identify and treat these concerns, too many children in the UK continue to suffer from preventable oral health issues, leading to unnecessary pain, missed school days, and avoidable dental extractions.

World Oral Health Day 2025 provides a valuable opportunity to highlight this issue and reinforce the importance of early education and access to care. It’s a time to remind parents, carers, and fellow dental professionals that simple measures - such as regular check-ups, twice-daily toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste, fluoride varnish applications, and limiting sugar intake - can significantly reduce the risk of childhood tooth decay and help children develop strong, healthy smiles for life.

Laying the foundation for good oral health begins in infancy, making preventive care a top priority. Encouraging parents to bring their children for routine check-ups, applying fluoride varnish, and educating families on proper brushing techniques are small yet impactful steps in preventing long-term dental problems. Equally, raising awareness about diet and the effects of sugar consumption is crucial - something as straightforward as swapping sugary drinks for water or milk can have a profound effect on a child’s oral health.

Collaboration is also key. Working alongside health visitors, midwives, and schools allows us to identify at-risk children early and ensure they receive the necessary support. By joining forces with public health teams and local authorities, we can strengthen community-wide initiatives that drive meaningful change.

I urge all dental professionals to use World Oral Health Day as an opportunity to educate, share resources, and engage with families about the importance of oral health. Together, we can instill lifelong healthy habits in children and help them maintain strong, confident smiles.

It’s about feeling supported, being able to grow your career and building a strong professional network. That’s why we’ve launched our new limited series Know the Drill – designed to offer insight, guidance and peer-to-peer support for dental professionals across the UK – Know the Drill is a podcast for clinicians, created with clinicians.

Featuring four episodes, Know the Drill brings together expert voices from within the mydentist Clinical Network, offering practical advice on mentorship, digital dentistry, professional development, wellbeing and more.

What to expect from Know the Drill

Each episode of Know the Drill features in-depth conversations with experienced clinicians and other dental professionals who work at a mydentist practice, our dedicated Support centre or in-house training centre, the Academy.

Each episode gives these dental professionals a platform to share their real-life experiences and actionable insights to help dental professionals navigate their careers.

Episode 1: Becoming a mentor at mydentist

The first episode explores the journey of mentorship with Matt Arnold, Clinical Development Advisor in the Northeast, alongside mentees Anitha Josie and Asad Shah. They discuss what it means to be a mentor or mentee, dispel common misconceptions and offer practical advice for those looking to take part in the mydentist mentorship scheme. Give this episode a try if you want to hear more on how Matt, Anitha and Asad also feel the mydentist mentorship has supported their professional growth and strengthened their careers.

Episode 2: Optimising the intraoral scanner for your dental practice

With digital dentistry evolving rapidly, the second episode focuses on how clinicians can optimise intraoral scanning in their practice. Clinical Digital Manager Dale Flanagan leads the discussion, joined by Clinical Development Advisors Neil Simkin and Jess Patel-Barnes. Together, they break down the importance of digital scanning, share expert tips and highlight the support available for clinicians adopting this technology. This episode will no doubt be of interest to those clinicians who want to learn more about applying new dental technologies in their practice.

Episode 3: Developing a new interest

Expanding your clinical skills can be an exciting but daunting process. In episode three, Clinical Development Advisors Rosanna Posl and Ruairi Leonard discuss how clinicians can explore new areas of interest, with a focus on clear aligners. They provide insights into how to start offering aligners, the future of this treatment and how to find the right interest for your practice.

Episode 4: Maintaining your mental and physical wellbeing

A healthy work-life balance is key to job satisfaction, professional success and providing the best care for patients. That’s why we’re proud to support our practice teams with initiatives that promote wellbeing, create strong professional communities and ensure clinicians have access to the support they need.

In the final episode, Know the Drill takes a holistic approach, exploring the importance of clinician wellbeing. Dental Therapist and Hygienist Megan Fairhall and Clinician Charmikha Romesh share their personal experiences of managing work-life balance, maintaining good mental health and finding support through professional networks.

A message from our Dr Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer here at mydentist

Dr Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer here at mydentist, highlighted the importance of Know the Drill in providing peer-to-peer support: “One of the biggest barriers you can face as a self-employed clinician is feeling isolated – that’s why I’m so proud to launch Know the Drill, our new podcast at mydentist, in which we’re able to draw on knowledge and insights from our Clinical Development Advisors and brilliant clinicians to support dental professionals inside and outside of our network.”

Nyree continued: “We know that one of the best ways we can achieve greater work and gain increased job satisfaction is through supporting each other, and as clinicians it can be difficult to navigate some of the challenges that are thrown your way. We’ve been working to understand these challenges and provide peer-to-peer advice to those within the mydentist network through our Clinical Advisory Board, and I’m hopeful that our new podcast will provide welcome insights to clinicians looking for some extra support – whether they’re newly qualified or experienced and looking to extend their network.”

It takes guidance, experience and a supportive network to help dental professionals develop their skills and confidence. That’s why our mentorship programme is at the heart of what we do, offering dentists the structure and encouragement they need to take the next step in their careers.

With a network of over 360 mentors, we provide comprehensive training to ensure experienced professionals can share their knowledge and support the next generation. Our structured approach includes online clinical development, engagement with our expert clinical team and an externally accredited two-day training course. This ensures mentees have a smooth transition into practice, building both their technical expertise and their professional confidence.

Meet our mentors and mentees

In the first episode of Know the Drill, we spoke with some of our experienced mentors and mentees to hear how the programme has helped them grow.

Matt Arnold – One of our mentor clinical development advisors in the northeast, Matt helps oversee mentorship programmes and has trained numerous clinicians. When asked why he wanted to become a mentor, Matt commented: "I was always encouraged to do it because I was quite passionate about teaching, always liking to help my colleagues out."

Anita Josie – A regional dentist based in Sunderland, Anita was a mentee under Matt Arnold and credits mentorship for helping her bridge the gap between theory and hands-on practice, when asked about her experience, Anita commented: "The clinical experience I have now, I think I got it mostly from the mentorship programme because it helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice."

Assad Shah – An associate dentist who trained under mydentist’s mentorship programme after graduating from Eastern Europe. Assad highlights the importance of having expert guidance in those crucial early years. As a clinician who qualified overseas, when asked about his experience of the mydentist mentorship programme, Assad commented: "I really wanted that safety net - someone to guide me in the right direction, someone to bounce ideas off."

Training and support that makes a difference

At mydentist, mentorship is more than just advice - it’s about structured support, shared experiences and ongoing learning. Our mentors receive dedicated training through webinars, e-learning modules and face-to-face development days. These sessions allow them to refine their skills, share insights and help shape the careers of new clinicians.

A key feature of our programme is the annual refresher training, ensuring mentors stay up to date with the latest industry practices. Our two-day mentor training course is particularly valuable, offering a deep dive into effective teaching methods and real-world applications. Many mentors, including Matt Arnold, have even returned to the course to gain fresh perspectives: "The course was brilliant. I actually went back and did it again just because I got so much out of it a few years later."

A strong foundation for mentees

For those just starting their journey, mentorship at mydentist provides invaluable support. Newly qualified dentists benefit from hands-on guidance, shadowing experienced mentors and building their confidence with structured learning. It’s a gradual process designed to ease the transition from training to independent practice, ensuring clinicians feel capable and supported at every step of the way.

One of the key benefits of our mentorship programme is that we remove the financial burden of supervision. Unlike traditional setups where mentees have to pay for mentorship, mydentist fully funds the programme, allowing new dentists to focus on learning and development without the stress of additional costs.

Confidence, career growth and community

Mentorship isn’t just about technical skills - it’s about building confidence, fostering professional relationships and creating a sense of belonging. As Assad Shah shared: "Every day I learn something new. Over time, you start to realise you're making fewer mistakes, working more effectively and feeling more confident in your ability."

At mydentist, we believe mentorship should be a two-way process, where both mentors and mentees grow through shared learning. For mentors, it’s an opportunity to develop leadership skills and gain fulfilment from guiding the next generation of dental professionals. For mentees, it’s a chance to gain hands-on experience, expert advice and long-term career guidance.

Looking ahead

As we continue to grow, we are committed to expanding our support, refining our training programmes and ensuring that every clinician has the guidance they need to succeed.

If you’re a newly qualified dentist looking for structured support, or an experienced professional considering becoming a mentor, our mentorship programme could be the perfect fit for you. Visit our careers page to learn more about how mydentist can support your journey.

We’ll be updating the mydentist blog with more exciting updates from our podcast series, including the future of digital dentistry, clear aligner treatment and specialising in orthodontics and how to prioritise your wellbeing as a dental professional.

That’s why we provide clinicians with the tools and guidance they need to broaden their treatment options, including one of the fastest-growing areas in dentistry: clear aligners.

In episode 2 of Know the Drill, Clinical Development Advisors Rosanna Posl and Ruairi Leonard shared their experiences of introducing clear aligners into their practice, the benefits of this treatment and how clinicians can get started.

Why offer clear aligner treatment?

Clear aligners are often thought of as purely cosmetic, but they also provide significant health benefits. Straightening teeth can improve occlusion, prevent uneven wear and reduce pressure on heavily restored teeth, helping to preserve long-term dental health.

Rosanna commented: "What people think of most with aligners is that it is actually for aesthetics, that it aligns the teeth to make them look nicer. But what a lot of people forget is that it actually has a massive benefit to dental health as well."

Ruairi agreed, highlighting the impact aligner treatment can have on patient confidence: "Moving away from the dental aspect of it, I think I have noticed the mental health and the confidence that patients get... I have patients now - I have got a lady, and I always use this example - she is a 64-year-old lady, and she was never offered any aligners or ortho or any kind of treatment. She had a really bad malocclusion where her lower jaw was quite tucked in far behind her. Overjet was quite big. And I said, let’s give it a go. And now she sings my praise, bless her, every time I see her."

The benefits of offering clear aligner treatment

For clinicians, adding clear aligners to their skillset can be both professionally and personally rewarding. Ruairi described how his work with aligners has given him a better work-life balance, commenting: "My favourite day of the week is actually the day I work the longest because I do clear aligners most of the day... From about 5 o’clock onwards, 90% of the patients are all my clear aligner patients. And it is a really enjoyable experience because, as Rosanna has already said, we do not lift a drill. There is not a lot of wet finger dentistry in there. They come in, we check the aligners, it is a chat and the odd little tweak here and there in the treatment. It is all just really positive."

Clear aligners also allow clinicians to provide more comprehensive treatment options for their patients. Rosanna explained: "It just makes me able to provide more treatment options to my patients as well. So, it is a GDC requirement to offer patients choice and there are always multiple ways that lead to a great result... It just makes me feel more confident in my treatments and makes me more confident I can solve the issues that patients are asking me to solve."

Training and support at mydentist

At mydentist, we make it easy for clinicians to broaden their skills by providing clear aligner training through the mydentist Academy, peer review groups and dedicated Clinical Development Advisors.

Rosanna highlighted the value of our internal resources: "What I really, really like is our intranet, Wisdom, where we have got the Clear Aligner Toolkit... It just provides support for basically everyone, whether that be ‘I am interested in aligners, and I just want to have a look,’ or whether you are an experienced clinician just looking for support. It has got everything in it."

Ruairi also emphasised the support available through peer networks: "The beautiful thing about us at mydentist is that you are never far away from someone who is quite high up within either Invisalign or ClearCorrect... We are a unique network within mydentist, that we are never sort of two or three clinicians away from someone else who is way more experienced than us in these different fields."

Getting started with clear aligners

For clinicians interested in offering clear aligners, the first step is training. Courses for Invisalign and ClearCorrect can be booked through mydentist Academy, and private and specialist development managers are always available to help guide clinicians in the right direction.

Ruairi encouraged those interested to start by speaking to colleagues, adding: "If a clinician is interested in doing clear aligners, just have a conversation with a clinician who is already doing it. Get your hands into some aligners, have a look, have a feel. We can get you in touch with the area reps for ClearCorrect and Invisalign, who can also point you in that direction."

Looking ahead

With the rise of digital dentistry and AI-assisted treatment planning, the future of clear aligners is exciting. Rosanna highlighted the benefits of new innovations like Clear Forward, which provides treatment planning support from orthodontic specialists, commenting: "It just takes so much pressure off, especially at the start when you are inexperienced, to have someone who is very experienced plan the case for you, and you can learn so much from them as well."

Ruairi also pointed to the growing role of AI-driven dental monitoring: “Essentially, it is a little take-home kit that a patient can use... They will take this little photo of their teeth and AI generates a message back to them. You get it as the dentist as well, and it will sort of say to the patient, ‘Yes, you are tracking really well, your aligners are going the way they are meant to, but we are picking up a little bit of gingivitis there. You might need to floss a bit better down in the lower area.’"

Confidence, career growth and community

At mydentist, we are proud to support clinicians as they develop their skills, helping them build their confidence and careers. Whether you are just starting out or looking to expand your practice, clear aligners are a great opportunity to enhance patient care and job satisfaction.
